Rava Upma

Upma is a South Indian breakfast which is made of semolina. Quite quick and easy to make. Can be also eaten as an evening snack. Goes well with a hot cup of ginger tea.

Ingredients:

1 cup rava (semolina)
2 cups water
1/2 tsp turmeric (optional)
1/3 cup boiled green peas (optional)
1/2 tsp chopped ginger
1/2 tsp chopped green chilly (optional)
Salt to taste
1 sprig curry leaf
1 sprig coriander leaves for garnish
1 tbsp oil
3/4 tsp urad dal (optional)
1 tsp mustard seeds
1/2 onion chopped (optional)

Method:

  • Dry roast the rava in a pan for 5 minutes. Remove and keep it aside.
  • In an another pan, add oil. Add the mustard seeds when the oil is hot.
  • Once the mustard seeds starts crackling, add ginger, onion, green chilly, curry leaf, turmeric, urad dal and the green peas.
  • Roast it for around 3-4 minutes. Add salt to taste and add 2 cups of water.
  • Once the water starts boiling, reduce the flame to low heat and slowly add the rava and mix it well.
  • Cover and cook it in very low flame till all the water is dried out and the rava turns translucent.
  • Uncover, add the chopped coriander leaves and mix it nicely.
  • Remove and serve it in a bowl along with a nice hot cup of ginger tea.
