Dal Fry

Dal Fry

Dal fry is just like the simple dal which we prepare at home. This is different from the normal thin dal and has a thicker consistency.  You can use either tur dal (Pigeon Peas) or Moong dal or the red lentils. I have used the red lentils here. The easiest recipe I have prepared so far.

1 cup red lentils
1 small tomatoes chopped3-4 cups of water
1/2 tsp turmeric powder
1 medium sized onion finely sliced
1-2 green chillies sliced horizontally
1 spring curry leaves
1/2 tsp red chilly powder
1 tsp sliced garlic
1 tsp sliced ginger
1 tsp jeera or cumin seeds
Pinch of hing or asafoetida powder
2 tbsp oil or ghee
2 tbsp chopped corinader leaves for garnish
salt to taste
1 tsp dried and crushed fenugreek leaves (kasuri methi)
1 tsp mustard seeeds
salt to taste

  • Pressure cook the dal with water. Add turmeric powder, chopped tomatoes and salt.
  • Switch off the gas after 2/3 whistles.
  • In a deep pan add oil or ghee. Once hot, add the mustard seeds. Once it splutters, add the garlic, ginger, green chilly, cumin seeds, curry leaves and hing. Mix it nicely for a minute or two.
  • Now add the sliced onion and crushed fenugreek. Saute it nicely it the onion turns translucent.
  • Add the chilly powder and mix well.
  • Now open the cooker and lightly mash the dal. Now pour the dal into the onion mixture.
  • Mix it nicely. You can add some water if it is too thick. Let it boil for a minute or two. Adjust the salt. Switch off the gas and garnish with chopped coriander.
  • Serve with steamed basmati rice or jeera rice, pickle and papadams.
