Crispy Beef Fry

Crispy Beef Fry

I tasted this dish when we ordered the Beef crispy in our office. It was absolutely tasty and because my colleague Geraldine, who is from the Philippines is not habituated to eating spicy food, this was the perfect dish for her.  I have made this some changes to this recipe by making it a bit spicy as we normally like. Its something similar to Mexican Fajitas  except for some ingredients which are extra. Those who are vegetarians can skip it the meat and add in the vegetables with Paneer or tofu strips fried to this recipe. While chopping the vegetables please make sure all of them cut vertical and in similar size. This will ensure that all the vegetables cook evenly.

1 large onion cut into thickly sliced
1 cup of sliced bell peppers (shimla mirch – red, yellow, orange & green)
1/2 kg boneless beef cut into 1 inch thin strips
1/2 cup of sliced mushrooms
2 tbsp garlic juveniles
2 tbsp ginger juveniles
5-6 juveniles of green chillies (I have used the Thai bird chilly to match the peppers)
1/2 cup carrot sliced in long strips
1 tsp soy sauce
1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional)
1 tbsp red chilly hot sauce (you can use 2 tbsp Tobacco sauce instead)
1 tbsp honey
1 tbsp rice vinegar (you can use the normal vinegar or apple cider vinegar)
4-6 tbsp Oil
Salt to taste
2 tbsp cornflour (1 tbsp for marinating the beef strips and 1 tbsp for making the gravy)
1 egg beaten

  • Marinate the beef with the beaten egg, 1 tbsp cornflour, salt, and 1/2 of the rice vinegar. Keep it aside for about 15-20 minutes.
  • Heat oil in a wok or a large frying pan.
  • Once hot add in the marinated beef and fry till its crispy and well done.
  • Remove the beef fry and keep it aside.
  • Now remove the oil and leave back only around 2 tbsp of oil.
  • Add the carrots, mushrooms, ginger, garlic and sliced red chilly and fry nicely. Make sure it does not burn so you need to constantly keep stirring it.
  • Meanwhile, in a small bowl mix together soy sauce, chilly sauce, vinegar, oyster sauce and the cornflour.
  • Add around 8-10 tbsp water to make a nice paste.
  • Now add the bell peppers to the carrot mixture and stir nicely. Add the sauce and mix well.
  • Add the fried beef strips and add few more tbsp of water so that the sauce coats the whole mixture.
  • Stir for around 4-5 minutes and switch off the gas.
  • Remove it in a serving bowl and garnish with chopped spring onions.
  • Serve with basmati rice or Thai flavored rice or you can have it as a starter by itself.

You can opt out the chillies if you do not want it spicy.
